When you're looking to hire new talent, it helps to know what you need. Certain attributes can make candidates better suited for your company than others. Similarly, as a job candidate, pay attention to how you project your value and qualities to the hiring manager.
Having certain skills is important; however, you want to make sure job candidates are also a great fit with your company culture. And as a candidate, you want to ensure the company is a good fit for you.
The key is to hire someone with the same values, not based only on capabilities.
Recently, on the Dean Graziosi Show podcast, Dean, one of my dear mentors, shared 11 values that he looks for when hiring. These are the qualities and values of his prime candidates. Do you have these in your tool belt?
Hungry for achievement- Be achievement-based, not time-based.
Genuine enthusiasm
Energetic
Competitive- with themselves, not others
Actively work on their personal growth
Internally motivated.
Results-focused and solution-oriented.
A "whatever it takes" attitude; not afraid to try again; believe that nothing can get in their way
Positive--don't bring negativity to work; focus on the good
Sense of urgency--understand what's going on and know how to move fast
Flexible--able to pivot
If you hire talent, ask the types of behavioral questions to help you identify if your candidates have these qualities.
As someone looking for your next opportunity, when you consider these qualities, how many of them can you check off? Which of these qualities would you want to adopt moving forward?
Everyone looking to hire you needs to feel "certain" that you will be the right fit for the role--because you know what you're doing and have the right set of values and attitude to get the job done.
During your interview, the #1 job is to communicate confidently that you are indeed the right fit. The only way you can accomplish that is by doing your homework before the interview and learn as much as you can about the position and the company.
First, to learn about the role, it's typically straightforward. Usually, open positions include a job specification--dissect it line by line, and look at your resume to come up with compelling stories where you demonstrate having and successfully using the skills they are looking for.
Second, how can you learn about the company? One way is to research the company via Google and read about it. Another method is to find out directly what it's like to work, thereby connecting with someone at the company. Here's one way to do that.
Look at your LinkedIn network and search for the company. LinkedIn will indicate who you know at that company or who could introduce you to someone who works at that company.
For example, if you are connected with me on LinkedIn, it will let you know which of my 22,550+ connections works at that company that I could introduce you to. The next step is for you to muster the courage to contact me and ask for an introduction to that person so that you can set up a 15-minute cyber-coffee to ask them quality questions about the company.
In this example, when you don't know someone at the company, you can ask me (the person you know) to introduce you. Send me (them) a message on LinkedIn and say something like this: "Hi Ginny, I hope you're doing well. I noticed that you know Jane Doe at Acme Co. There's an open position there that I believe I would be a great fit for, and I wondered if you could introduce me to Jane Doe so that I could learn more about the company from an insider. Would you be willing to make the introduction via email or a LinkedIn message? This is how you can introduce me... And provide a couple of sentences indicating who you are, what you do, who you do it for. Provide your email address. And thank them, genuinely, for taking the time to read your message.
Based on this example, here's what I would send to my contacts to introduce me to someone in their network: "Ginny is an international transformational speaker and leadership coach, career strategist, and #1 bestselling author. She works with individuals to help them get promoted and navigate the complexities of the corporate world. She has worked with Fortune 500 companies to develop leadership dream teams. She has successfully delivered leadership training, coaching programs, and keynotes impacting global audiences greater than 7,000."
The easier you make it for your network contacts to introduce you, the more likely they will be willing to make an introduction.
When you assess if this company's culture and values are a good fit for you before an interview, you will prepare properly and project confidence and certainty to the person interviewing you.
No matter how desperate you may be to find a job, companies are also desperate to find the right candidates. It's a two-way street. Don't underestimate the value of asking the right questions to gauge whether the company would be a good fit for you! If you know you're a great worker and contributor, let them know that you know your value, can think on your feet, can learn fast, and would be a valued addition to their team--at whatever level of the organization you plan to contribute.
If you struggle to execute any of these strategies and techniques, don't fret.
