Have you ever felt frustrated because your project is not moving fast enough?
You're trying to get it done, you know exactly what needs to happen, and it seems that people around you are dragging their feet, not making decisions; you keep meeting over this same topic, and nothing gets done, and nothing gets resolved.
This outcome is a sign that we need to work on your influence.
It signifies that your influence skills need to be up-leveled and upskilled.
It happens to many of us. We know the subject matter we're dealing with and have a clear idea and vision of how to solve the problem. We must enlist and recruit others to see our perspective.
How do we do that?
How do we influence others successfully to get it done and get the results and impact you envision for the team?
I am about to reveal an essential tool I share with members of my private coaching programs and the Fearless Leadership Mastermind, a unique training for talented female leaders.
Create your centers of influence diagram
The tool we apply I call "Your centers of influence diagram." This is a proven tool I've been using for a long time on my own before incorporating it into my coaching and leadership training programs.
Now that I have my coaching practice, our clients benefit because it helps them build a support network of allies.
The result of using this tool is that by building relationships and being strategic about engaging those in your Centers of Influence diagram, key decision-makers are already on board with your idea by the time you attend that meeting.
How do you build your centers of influence diagram?
Here it is:
Identify the people around you who would be in charge of making certain decisions.
Be authentic, genuine, and intentional about building relationships with them, your centers of influence.
Some of the names on the diagram may change from project to project. However, there's something that will be common across the board.
It's essential to consider and identify project members and stakeholders:
The people at your level, colleagues.
Your peers, who may be asked, "what do you think about what Ginny is proposing? You want your peers to be on board with your idea as well.
The people above you, your manager.
Your team.
The people who will be doing the actual work.
Other stakeholders. You want to align with other folks around the organization in other departments, such as marketing, operations, legal compliance, and finance, who may also be involved in your project.
Building relationships with these different groups of people will impact not only the current project you desire to move forward with but future projects too.
And most important, it is going to increase your influence across the organization, boost your personal brand, and help you build relationships and a support network as you advance and grow in your role and career.
Takeaway and Call to Action
Over the past 30+ years, I've learned that building relationships is crucial and is one of the essential factors in your success in the business world.
As a bonus, those relationships empower you to feel a greater sense of belonging and a conduit for you to add the most value to your organization.
Without a doubt, I highly recommend building your centers of influence diagram to gain allies, mentors, and sponsors, where you both receive and contribute.
Being intentional about nurturing and regularly connecting with these stakeholders and even cultivating authentic friendships at work makes a world of difference in how quickly you advance within your organization and how you feel at work.
Some of my best friends are former co-workers and colleagues. The many hours we spend at work or engaged in work-related activities sometimes outweigh our downtime at home. It only makes sense that we advocate and show up for ourselves and those we spend a vast amount of time with by developing real connections.
We align with the collaborators and decision-makers involved in our projects through authentic connections.
And suppose you struggle to build relationships, influence key stakeholders, and navigate your existing workplace to grow and advance in your role. In that case, you can reach us at www.callwithginny.com to set up a complimentary strategy session. We can explore how our programs can help you and your leaders gain the tools and strategies leaders must possess to advance and thrive in their careers without feeling overwhelmed.
Live with purpose, live with joy!
