What is the #1 step to get to your next level?

Today, I want to help you identify how to get to your next level, whatever that next level is for you.

You may be thinking, "Come on, Ginny, how can I not know what I want next?"

Well, it isn't always easy to pinpoint precisely what you want to do next, especially when you've been performing the same role for a while and you feel at a loss. You may think that what you've been doing is all you know, and there is comfort and certainty in it.

In the process, maybe you've forgotten that you have other superpowers--qualities and abilities you use daily and don't even realize it.

For example:

  • You may be a great influencer and get buy-in from stakeholders.

  • You can collaborate well with other groups.

  • You help others see the big picture so they don't get lost in the details.

  • You could be great at conflict resolution or excellent with time management.

  • You know how to prioritize, allocate space for strategic activities, and do tactical tasks.

  • You could be great at coaching and mentoring team members.

These are all capabilities that you may exhibit and do well in the context of your role, and you do not realize that you're doing them every day as they feel so natural.

We tend to take our superpowers for granted and may think that everyone else has them too. That is not the case.

As you think about your next level, focus on your intention and purpose:

  • I know I have more to give.

  • I know that I can contribute at a higher capacity and level within my organization..

Then, begin to look at roles that would leverage your superpowers--those qualities you bring to the table.

As you reach out to people in these roles or those in your network exposed to them, you can learn more about what it would take to pursue the position you want.

For instance, if you want to be a client executive, someone who interacts with customers, but you've been chiefly performing inward-facing roles, think of what qualities you leverage now to interact with people within the organization to translate to the desired outcome role.

That's how you begin to make the transition from the role that you're into the one you want:

  • Assess what you would be good at in that particular role;

  • Identify how you would add value.

  • Reflect on how you would also be expanding on your experiences.

You know you're ready for a role change when you've been in the same job for a while, and you no longer feel challenged. Instead, you feel bored, stuck in Groundhog's Day.

If you feel stuck in your role today, don't give up.

Let's get curious about what another role looks like and how you may be able to transition to it.

Reflect on this crucial question and creatively craft a response, being brutally honest with yourself.

  • If I wanted that role, what are some of the steps I should take starting this week, this month, to move forward in that direction?

When I began transitioning from my corporate role into my leadership coaching, career strategist, motivational speaker, and author, it wasn't something that happened overnight.

It took time for me to develop what I wanted to do, what I would be good at, what brought me joy. And then, how could I be successful at it.

Think about what resources you would need, what type of support, and who can provide that support?

Getting clear on what you want to do is the first step. The second step is how do I do this?

Easier said than done? If you need support, you can reach us at www.callwithginny.com to set up a complimentary strategy session. You'll gain more clarity and assess what's the right next step for you.

Live with purpose, live with joy!
